Can I place myself in your position?

Can I truly understand your set of circumstances: the way you perceive them, how you feel about them, how you rationalize the things that are going on around you, and the sequence of events that led you here, today, to me?
Do I truly have the presence of mind to understand who you truly are, and what it is your soul is seeking to find?

Surely at different levels in my understanding of you, I project my understanding of me - of my world, of my experience and circumstances. As I learn more about you, I must start to see more about me.  Perhaps, the deeper we understand each other, the deeper we will know ourselves, and the more we share with one another, the broader each of our perspectives will be on the world around us - on how it works, and on our relationship with each other, and with all that is.

And, when I start to understand that at the most fundamental level of being, I really do depend on you, then from now on I'll call you my friend.
