My Diary 2010
  Last update:  May 2010

It was my Grand Uncle - the late Malcolm Muggeridge, who said:
"It is only possible to succeed at second-rate pursuits - like becoming a millionaire or a prime minister, winning a war, seducing beautiful women, flying through the stratosphere or landing on the moon. First-rate pursuits - involving, as they must, trying to understand what life is about and trying to convey that understanding - inevitably result in a sense of failure. A Napoleon, a Churchill, a Roosevelt can feel themselves to be successful, but never a Socrates, a Pascal, a Blake. Understanding is forever unattainable. Therein lies the inevitability of failure in embarking upon its quest, which is nonetheless the only one worthy of serious attention."

DSCF8604We who have embarked upon this journey - toward a greater understanding, and therefore a deeper appreciation, of life's meaning - often land up feeling alone. It is hard to describe to someone else the sub- structure to our thoughts and values if they are not already aware that such depth exists.
Those of us who peel away the layers that make up the fabric of our reality are often in awe at the deep, deep interconnected structure of everything that is. Yet, we will never know it all. No one of us can understand both the breadth and depth to all that exists. There are those that leap into the depths of a single subject, and end up uncovering only a tiny part of its mystery. And there are those, like myself, who fly high enough to gaze out over the landscape of life, and we ponder deeply its overall grandness - we look as far over the horizon as we can, only to discover places our imagination has never been before. And after half a lifetime of such a journey, we look into the eyes of those who have not yet begun and wonder why.

Equally, to them, the thoughts behind our eyes seem to recede further and further away...
